Due to popular demand and the fact that the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal is handing down its judgment on C v D on 30 June 2023, we are extending the HK45 Essay Competition submission deadline to 17 July 2023. We are inviting submissions from young practitioners and students. Topic

Option 1: What limits, if any, should be placed on witness preparation in the context of international arbitration?

Option 2: Should breach of contractual pre-conditions to arbitration be considered as an admissibility issue or an issue impacting the arbitral tribunal's jurisdiction?

Option 3: What impact will the current geopolitical climate have on the future of international arbitration?

Word count

Not more than 2500 words, excluding appendices, footnotes, tables, etc.

Plus:

• Winning essays will be selected by an esteemed panel of judges.
• The top essay from both categories will be considered for publication in Asian Dispute Review (subject to review by the Asian Dispute Review Editorial Board).
• The 1st runner up and 2nd runner up in both categories will be considered for publication in the Kluwer Arbitration Blog (subject to review by the Kluwer Arbitration Blog Editorial Board and subject to editorial comments to meet the Blog's editorial policy and guidelines, including a 1,500-word requirement). In particular, the piece should be original and address current issues on the topic, rather than only summarize cases or core concepts.

Please make sure to include at the top of your submission your name, organisation, country and whether you would like your submission to be considered under the Global Category or Asia Emerging Economies Category.

Emerging Economies include: India, Indonesia, Laos, Mainland China, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan, the Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. If your country or territory is not included in this list, please email us with the name of your country or territory and your CV to confirm whether your submission will be considered in the Asia Emerging Economies Category or Global Category. Participants from Emerging Economies who have had significant arbitration experience in developed jurisdictions will be considered under the Global Category.

All work should be original, and plagiarism will result in disqualification. We do not currently accept co-authorship. Judges' decisions will be final.

Participants must be under 45 years old, and members of HK45.
