The Hong Kong Mediation Council (HKMC), a division of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC), is offering a mediation training course designed for individuals who are interested in becoming accredited mediators. The course will cover the following topics:
- The key principles of mediation as a means of dispute resolution;
- Principles of interest-based negotiation;
- The process of facilitative mediation model;
- The role of a mediator
- Mediator's skills and techniques
- Ethical code of conduct for mediators
- Drafting settlement agreements; and
- Role of lawyers and advisors in mediation
WHO SHOULD ATTEND:
- Legal practitioners, service professionals, government officers, corporate executives, senior management, corporate communications managers and dispute resolution practitioners.
COURSE DETAILS:
- The course will be taught in English with English materials
- This is a 40-hour mediation training course conducted over a period of 5 days (see schedule below).
- The course has been accredited by the Hong Kong Mediation Accreditation Association Limited ("HKMAAL"), and would seek CPD accreditation from the Law Society of Hong Kong
SCHEDULE:
9:00am to 06:15pm - 8 hour sessions on each day:
- Day 1: Saturday 16 October 2021;
- Day 2: Sunday 17 October 2021;
- Day 3: Saturday 23 October 2021;
- Day 4: Sunday 24 October; and
- Day 5: Saturday 30 October 2021
(subject to the CO-VID19 situation in Hong Kong, this Course could be conducted either in a physical classroom, or in hybrid mode (online teaching + face-to-face exercises)
PARTICIPATION FEE:
- Standard: HK$15,000*
- Early Bird:HK$13,000* (expire by Thursday 30 September 2021, 6:00pm)

Christopher

Lead Trainer
Christopher is an independent mediator, adjudicator and arbitrator who is on the panels of various leading global alternative dispute resolution bodies. He has arbitrated and adjudicated a variety of international cases involving both ad-hoc and institutional arbitrations and adjudications, and has mediated many international and domestic cases to date. After joining the Bar, he has represented clients in a variety of arbitrations as counsel.
Christopher has written a variety of articles and publications in the areas of arbitration, adjudication, mediation, corporate governance and internet domain names and continues to write in these areas.
As former Secretary-General of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre, he managed to elevate Hong Kong’s status as the regional dispute resolution hub of Asia by increasing the number of international dispute cases being referred to Hong Kong for amiable resolution as well as creating the Asian Domain Name Dispute Resolution Centre, a body that has gain international prominence within the dot.com community as a reliable, trustworthy, independent and reputable entity that manages domain name disputes. Prior to joining the Bar, he was the inaugural Executive Director of the Construction Industry Council, a position he held for 8 years, to which a variety of prominent achievements were made, including the renowned “Zero Carbon Building” an icon of the Build Environment that has been recognized globally.
Christopher has a board practice and accepts instructions in all areas of work with emphasis on arbitration, adjudication and mediation.
Josephine Ma
Assistant Trainer
Josephine is a solicitor and a mediation trainer. She is an Accredited General Mediator, Family Mediator and Family Mediation Supervisor. She is a Committee Member of HKMC, and Co-Chairperson of the Commercial Interest Group and member of the Family Interest Group of HKMC. She started mediating in 2004 and has a wealth of experience in both mediating and teaching mediation.
Jacky Lai
Assistant Trainer
Jacky has served as a mediator in hundreds of cases. He is Head Trainer and Chief Assessor for TQUK/ Ofqual mediation course and Assistant Trainer of HKMAAL 40-hour curriculum, HKCAAVQ Mediation Subject Expert and ICC International Mediation Competition Coach and Judge, Professional Mediator on many mediation panels and mentor mediator for JMHO. He is a Committee Member of HKMC.
