The Hong Kong Mediation Council (HKMC) holds webinars under different topics in order to update the knowledge of mediators and hone their practical skills. The webinars are conducted online via ZOOM.
This will be the 6th webinar in the series which will look at the use of advocacy in mediation. It will discuss the proper role and essential skills of a mediation advocate. The target audience is accredited mediators and legal practitioners including in-house counsel as well as other professionals in mediation. The webinar will be presented by four speakers who are all current or past chairpersons of HKMC, and will cover the following topics:
- Basics of mediation advocacy
- The role of mediation advocates
- Diagnosing misuse and abuse of advocacy in mediation
- How can advocates effectively prepare for a mediation session?
- Joint session: how to achieve a balance of assertion and inquiry?
- Strategic use of caucuses in the negotiation phase

A Zoom ID and Password for the Webinar will be circulated to paid registrants by emails closer to the event's date.
There will be a short quiz at the conclusion of the Webinar in the form of multiple choice questions on the content of the Webinar. The satisfactory completion of the multiple choice questions will serve as an actual proof of attendance in compliance with the requirements from CPD awarding bodies.
Speakers
Mr CW Ling
Chairman, HKMC
CW is the current Charmian of HKMC. He has been a practicing barrister and a member of Des Voeux Chambers since 1999. CW is an accredited mediator and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He is registered on the list of arbitrators under the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre. He is also the Vice-Chairman of the Mediation Committee of the Hong Kong Bar Association.
Mr Vod Chan
Past Chairman, HKMC
Vod is a Past Chairman of HKMC. He is a practicing barrister with Chambers of Ronny Wong, S.C., and an accredited general and family mediator of HKIAC and HKMAAL, as well as a listed arbitrator of HKIAC. Having taught mediation advocacy since 2012, Vod has also mediated a wide array of disputes, and delivered mediation training and talks to a broad spectrum of audience, as well as acted as a mediation advocate. In 2018, he coached a team of CityU law students which was crowned the champion at the HK International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) International Mediation Competition, and then led the team to compete in the ICC International Commercial Mediation Competition in Paris.
Mr. Hing Fung

Past Chairman, HKMC
HF is a past Chairman of HKMC and is an Associate Professor (Practice) at the University of Hong. He is also a practicing mediator, arbitrator and barrister. He is a general accredited mediator in the Panel of Hong Kong Mediation Accreditation Association Limited (HKMAAL); an arbitrator in the Panel of Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre and the Joint Panel of Hong Kong Institute of Architect and Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors. HF is a frequent contributor to journals and seminars.
Ms Jody Sin
Vice-Chairperson, HKMC
Jody is currently the Vice-Chairperson of HKMC. She is an accredited mediator of HKMAAL, Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC) and Hong Kong Law Society, an IMI Certified Mediator and a Distinguished Fellow of International Academy of Mediators. She has substantial experience in mediating disputes of different nature, from commercial, employment, shareholder to insurance disputes. She is a seasoned trainer and teacher of mediation courses.
