Professor Albert Jan van den Berg


Professor Albert Jan van den Bergis a partner in Hanotiau & van den Berg (Brussels, Belgium). He is Honorary President of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration, having served as President from 2014โ€“2016. He is a Visiting Professor at Georgetown University Law Center, Washington DC, and Tsinghua University School of Law, Beijing; Emeritus Professor at Erasmus University, Rotterdam; and a former Visiting Professor at University of Miami School of Law. Professor van den Berg is presiding and party-appointed arbitrator in numerous international commercial and investment arbitrations. He also acts as counsel in international commercial arbitrations. He is former President and Secretary-General of the Netherlands Arbitration Institute and Vice-President of the London Court of International Arbitration. Professor van den Berg has published extensively on international arbitration (see www.hvdb.com), in particular, the New York Convention of 1958 (see www.newyorkconvention.org). His awards include: Global Arbitration Review, "Best Prepared and Most Responsive Arbitrator" in 2013; The International Who's Who Legal, Arbitration: Lawyer of the Year in 2006, 2011 and 2017.



Professor Julian D M Lew QC

Julian Lew has been involved with international arbitration for more than 40 years as an academic, counsel and arbitrator. Before 2005, he was a partner and the head of the international arbitration practice group of Herbert Smith Freehills where he advised and represented clients under all the major arbitration systems. He is now a member of 20 Essex Street, London, and practices as a full-time arbitrator in international commercial and investment disputes. He principally accepts appointments as arbitrator in international commercial and investment disputes.


Professor Lew founded the School of International Arbitration (Queen Mary University of London) in 1985 and remains the Head of the School. He has published extensively on many aspects of international arbitration and is frequently invited to speak on international arbitration topics.

About HK45

HK45 is a group for professionals who are under 45 years of age and who are interested in the practice of arbitration. The mission of the group is to promote interest in and knowledge of issues relating to arbitration. HK45 is formed under the auspices of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre, and is intended to provide opportunities for both professional development and social interaction.
