CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

HK45 is delighted to announce that together with PwC we will be hosting the 2024 edition of the Expert Witness Cross-Examination training! In this programme, participants will be able to practice cross-examination on a mock international arbitration case before a panel of distinguished arbitration practitioners. Our experienced tribunal members will provide feedback on the counsels' performance at the end of the session.

This HK45 x PwC training, which is organised annually by experienced arbitration lawyers and experts, offers an outstanding opportunity for successful applicants to gain hands-on cross-examination experience. Participation is highly recommended for practitioners who are interested in developing their advocacy skills and learning from distinguished advocates.

This year the training will be held in-person using a case involving cyber forensics expert evidence, allowing participants to practice cross-examining experts on various cyber & technology concepts.

A mandatory training session will be held on Tuesday 30 January 2024 (4:30 pm, Hong Kong time). The mock hearing will be held on Friday 23 February 2024 (3:00 pm - 6:00 pm, Hong Kong time). Preparation is required prior to the hearing.

  • Law firms will be invited to nominate a team of two representatives to take part in this programme (up to c. 7 years PQE) by 17 January 2024.
  • Successful participants will be informed during the week of 22 January 2024 and be allocated to Claimant and Respondent teams, each consisting of 2 lawyers and 1 expert from PwC.
  • During the week of 22 January 2024, participants will be issued with a briefing pack and detailed guidelines on how to prepare for the hearing.
  • This will be followed by a training session on 30 January 2024 where an experienced arbitration practitioner will provide tips on how to conduct effective cross-examination. A computer forensics expert from PwC will also share their insight on the key issues in the dispute.
  • On the day of the mock hearing (23 February 2024), panels will be held simultaneously with teams going head-to-head. Each team will have the opportunity to spend 40 minutes cross-examining the opposing expert whilst appointed arbitrators will observe and provide feedback.

THE MOCK HEARINGS

There will be several in-person hearings taking place on 23 February 2024 with the legal seat or place of arbitration being Hong Kong. The hearings will be held at Mayer Brown, and will be followed by networking drinks for all participants.

REGISTRATION

Applications will be accepted upon approval. Please note that applications should be made by pre-constituted teams of two lawyers from the same law firm or Chamber. This event is aimed at Hong Kong-qualified lawyers (or Registered Foreign Lawyers in Hong Kong) who have up to 7 years or less post-qualification experience. Priority will be given to HK45 members.

Given that places are limited for this event, applicants are therefore requested to ensure that they are able to attend the training workshop on 30 January 2024 and the event itself on 23 February 2024. Participants are also expected to commit sufficient time for the preparation for the event (approx. 10 to 15 hours over a four to five-week period prior to the event, including reading-in, discussions with the PwC expert assigned to each legal team, and preparation for the cross-examination itself).

  • If you are interested in participating in this unique event, please fill in the registration form by clicking "Register". Successful applicants for the event will be notified by email after the close of the application. The application process will close at 6:00 pm HKT on 17 January 2024.
