The Hong Kong Mediation Council (HKMC) intends to host a series of webinars entitled "Mediation Insight Series" in order to update the knowledge of mediators and hone their practical skills. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the seminars will not be held physically but conducted online via ZOOM. This is the seventh seminar which will highlight the soft skills necessary for the success of commercial mediation, in particular, the need to identify and overcome biases. It is expected to last 75 mins (including a Q&A session of 15mins) without a break. Topics to be covered or shared by speakers include:
- Bias and heuristics;
- Thinking systems of the brain;
- Common biases in mediation;
- How do cognitive biases affect mediation?
- Strategies to minimize cognitive biases;
- How the mediator can help parties overcome biases; and
- Sharing by speakers
The target audience is General Mediators and Legal Practitioners including In-House Counsel.
In order to ensure that participants meet CPD requirements, the lunchtime webinar includes a quiz at the end on the content of the talk.

An HKMAAL accredited mediator (General and Family), Jacky has served as a mediator in hundreds of cases. He is Head Trainer and Chief Assessor for TQUK/ Ofqual mediation course and Asst. Head Trainer of HKMAAL 40-hour curriculum, HKCAAVQ Mediation Subject Expert and ICC International Mediation Competition Coach and Judge, Professional Mediator on many mediation panels and mentor mediator for JMHO. He is also a member of the HKMC’s General Mediation Interest Group, Commercial Mediation Group and the Family Interest Group.

CW is the Immediate Past Charmian of HKMC. He has been a practicing barrister and a member of Des Voeux Chambers since 1999. CW is an accredited mediator and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He is registered on the list of arbitrators under the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre and is a member of the Panel of Intellectual Property Arbitrators. He is also the Vice-Chairman of the Mediation Committee of the Hong Kong Bar Association.
Josephine Ma

Josephine is a solicitor and a mediation trainer. She is an Accredited General Mediator, Family Mediator and Family Mediation Supervisor. She is a member of the Executive Committee of HKMC, and Co-Chairperson of the Commercial Interest Group and member of the Family Interest Group of HKMC. She started mediating in 2004 and has a wealth of experience in both mediating and teaching mediation.
