Mariel is Secretary-General of Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre. She is an international commercial and investment arbitration specialist.
Prior to joining the HKIAC, Mariel was a Partner at CMS and Co-Head of the global CMS International Arbitration Group. She has over 15 years' experience acting as adviser and advocate in numerous international arbitrations. She has extensive experience in both common law and civil law disputes, including disputes involving Chinese parties, and has full professional fluency in German. She also sits regularly as arbitrator and has experience as arbitrator under the HKIAC, ICC, KCAB, and DIS Rules, and in ad hoc disputes. She is on the arbitrator panels of several institutions.
She is a past co-chair of the HK45 Committee, and a member of the WILHK Advisory Board. She is consistently ranked in both the regional and global editions of the leading legal directories.
Aiko Hosokawa is a partner at Oh-Ebashi LPC & Partners with a broad experience in the area of international and domestic dispute resolution. Especially, she has expertise in international arbitration and has been involved in various international arbitration cases as counsel. She also advises clients on international commercial transactions.
Dong is Managing Counsel at the HKIAC.
Prior to joining the HKIAC, Dong worked for nearly nine years at an international firm in Hong Kong and Beijing, where she gained experience in a wide range of disputes, including commercial, trade, and construction disputes involving parties of different background and nationalities. Dong has been involved in international arbitrations conducted under various institutional rules, including the HKIAC Rules, as well as in arbitration-related court proceedings.
Dong has full professional proficiency in written and spoken Chinese and English, and is also fluent in Italian. Dong is admitted in Hong Kong and New York.
David MacArthur is a specialist in international arbitration and is Co-head of the firm’s International Arbitration practice.
A US-qualified lawyer with over 15 years' experience in civil-law jurisdictions, David acts as counsel and arbitrator. As a leading member of a globally ranked arbitration practice since 2006, David has represented clients in dozens of international arbitrations across Asia, Europe and North America in a wide variety of complex and high-stakes disputes in the automotive, aircraft, IP, life sciences and medical, post-M&A, online gaming, shipbuilding and construction, telecommunications and other industries.
In addition to his arbitration practice experience, David has also acquired the critical “soft skills” of proficiency in the cultures, languages and legal systems of East Asia.
Recognized in Who’s Who Legal, Chambers and Partners, The Legal 500 and other peer-reviewed rankings, David has served in a number of leadership and influence positions, including as founding Co-chair of “KCAB Next,” a professional development organization under the auspices of KCAB INTERNATIONAL and as a member of the Silicon Valley Arbitration and Mediation Center’s Asia Task Force.
He also acts as arbitrator and has been appointed to the approved arbitrator lists of the HKIAC (Hong Kong), JCAA (Japan), KCAB (Korea), AIAC (Southeast Asia) and WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization).
David is admitted to the Utah State Bar (USA) and is a member of the International Bar Association (IBA), the Inter-Pacific Bar Association (IPBA), the Japan Association of Arbitrators (JAA) and other organizations.
Lars is a partner in our international dispute resolution department. He regularly advises Asian clients, in particular from Japan, on German and European law issues, spanning a broad range of industries and subjects from international disputes, commercial negotiations, to internal investigations and compliance. He also advises German and other European clients on their business activities in Asia. He has particular experience in contentious proceedings involving post-M&A, commercial, manufacturing, construction and distribution matters, in areas such as life sciences, automotive and energy. Lars also deals with cases involving governments, and has advised foreign investors and sovereign states on issues of foreign direct investment and public international law, including related negotiations and investor-state disputes. He has been involved in more than 45 international arbitrations as counsel or arbitrator under the arbitration rules of institutions such as the DIS, ICC, Swiss Chambers, NAI, ICDR, KCAB, JCAA, SIAC and ICSID, as well as under UNCITRAL Rules.
Lars is the winner of the 2020 Lexology client choice award for “Arbitration and ADR” in Japan. He is listed in BestLawyers Japan 2021, by Asialaw Leading Lawyers as “Notable Practitioner” for Dispute Resolution in 2020, included in the 2021 and 2020 (Global Elite Thought Leaders), 2019 (Thought Leader) and 2018 Who’s Who Legal: Arbitration, the 2017 Who’s Who Legal – Future Leaders: Arbitration (Leading Individuals), as well as listed in the 2020 edition of Legal500 Japan and the 2018 edition of Legal500 Germany as one of the “next generation partners”.
