In February 2018, HKIAC announced the launch of Women In Arbitration (WIA), an initiative committed to the promotion and success of female practitioners in international arbitration and related practice areas in China. WIA provides a forum for members to consider and discuss current topics, grow networks and business relationships, and develop the next generation of leading female practitioners.
The launch of the WIA initiative is one of several important steps HKIAC has taken to improve the representation of women in arbitration since signing the Equal Representation in Arbitration Pledge (Pledge) in October 2016. Through self-development, sharing and exchanging ideas facing China and the wider world, WIA aims to promote the rights of female practitioners and increase the visibility of women in the field of arbitration worldwide.
Since the launch of the initiative, WIA has organised activities in Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong, which have included round table discussions, debates, and social events. The topics covered include career development, women's personal growth, value building, and intellectual property arbitration. WIA has increased awareness amongst the arbitration community to the issues facing women, and has galvanised support for diversity in arbitration. To further it's work, WIA has decided to establish a committee. Committee members will be selected from the applications received.
